Variables let you reuse values without retyping them. They are useful for algebra practice, repeated formulas, graphing, programs and statistics workflows.
What variables are
A variable is a named storage location for a value, list, matrix, equation or other calculator object. The most common beginner workflow is storing a number in a letter variable and using it later in an expression.
Store a value
- Enter the value. Type the number or expression you want to store.
- Press store. Use the calculator store arrow key.
- Choose the variable. Press ALPHA and the letter variable, then ENTER.
Recall a value
To use a stored variable, insert the variable in an expression. For example, if A holds a number, you can calculate 2A+5.
Variables in graphing
Function variables such as Y1, Y2 and Y3 are special. Use the correct function-variable menu rather than typing ordinary letters. This matters when you want to store a regression equation to Y1 or graph a formula saved from another tool.
Common variable mistakes
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Typing command names as letters | Paste special commands from menus. |
| Using old values unknowingly | Clear or overwrite variables before a new problem. |
| Typing matrix names manually | Paste matrix names from the matrix names menu. |
