Variables, Storage and Recall

Follow the steps while keeping the calculator open in another tab.

Variables let you reuse values without retyping them. They are useful for algebra practice, repeated formulas, graphing, programs and statistics workflows.

Original documentation note: This page is written for our independent online calculator site. It follows the learning topics users expect from a TI-84-style calculator guide, but the wording and examples are original.

What variables are

A variable is a named storage location for a value, list, matrix, equation or other calculator object. The most common beginner workflow is storing a number in a letter variable and using it later in an expression.

Store a value

  1. Enter the value. Type the number or expression you want to store.
  2. Press store. Use the calculator store arrow key.
  3. Choose the variable. Press ALPHA and the letter variable, then ENTER.

Recall a value

To use a stored variable, insert the variable in an expression. For example, if A holds a number, you can calculate 2A+5.

Variables in graphing

Function variables such as Y1, Y2 and Y3 are special. Use the correct function-variable menu rather than typing ordinary letters. This matters when you want to store a regression equation to Y1 or graph a formula saved from another tool.
