Home Screen, History and Status Bar

Follow the steps while keeping the calculator open in another tab.

The home screen is where most direct calculations happen. It also stores recent entries, shows answers, and displays important status indicators such as angle mode and whether 2nd or Alpha is active.

Original documentation note: This page is written for our independent online calculator site. It follows the learning topics users expect from a TI-84-style calculator guide, but the wording and examples are original.

What the home screen is for

Use the home screen for arithmetic, algebraic expressions, functions, probability commands, matrix calculations and many pasted commands from menus. Enter the expression, then press ENTER.

When you are inside another tool, pressing 2nd then MODE is the common workflow for quitting back toward the home screen.

Reuse previous work

The up and down arrows can move through previous entries and answers. This is useful when you want to edit a calculation instead of typing it again.

  1. Scroll to the previous entry. Use the arrow keys to highlight the calculation you want.
  2. Paste it to the current line. Press ENTER to reuse it.
  3. Edit and calculate again. Change the number, sign or function, then press ENTER.

Understand the status bar

The status bar is the small top information area. It helps you confirm whether the calculator is in Degree or Radian mode, MathPrint or Classic mode, and whether special states such as 2nd or ALPHA are active.

Status itemWhy it matters
RADIAN or DEGREEChanges trigonometric answers.
FLOAT or fixed decimalControls how many decimal places are displayed.
2nd indicatorThe next key press uses the secondary function.
Alpha indicatorThe next key press enters an alphabetic character or Alpha command.

Common beginner mistakes

If the result does not look right, first check the status bar. Many wrong-looking answers come from Degree/Radian mode, fixed decimal display, or an unfinished MathPrint template.
